Positive or negative writing? It's a no-brainer.

When it comes to writing, one of these writing styles wins the day.

And it's a clear choice. It's positive writing.

By positive writing, I mean writing that is uplifting and inclusive.

Negative writing is stifling. Negative writing finds fault and criticizes.

Positive writing is abundant and clear. Positive writing speaks of possibilities.

Negative writing narrows in on flaws and falls over in the grave it digs for itself.

When you write, you should write to inspire.

You should write to shine a light on issues that desperately need attention.

Write to b u ild a movement — because the world is brighter when everyone's included.

Here are some of the way the world changes when you write positively.

1. Your world becomes expansive.

Writing about hope, about opportunities, and about celebrating others opens the doors for your readers to walk through.

2. People buy into your message because they see it is bigger than any one person

If you write only about yourself, you readers won't have a seat at the table. If you write about a bright future in which all are welcome, then you signal that the door to your home is open.

3. Positive writing is uplifting, even if the topic is a dark one.

For example, if I write about the lessons I learn after health crisis — like I did here — I can focus on the lessons I learned. I can write with vulnerability so that others can connect to the strength of raw emotions.

4. Positive writing is about creating uplifting storylines — stories that become so grand that your readers can enter from many different doors.

Great, inspirational storylines allow readers to see themselves in what you write. Great storylines are accessible to all who wish to read them.

5. Positive writing primes the mind for what comes next.

Think about a leader that inspires you. What is it about his or her message that propels you to take action? It's probably not just the words that are said — but the way in which they are said.

Positive writing does that; it provides the launching pad for others to launch their next great journeys.

Negative writing doesn't deserve a list

But here's a short one anyway.

1. Negative writing cuts off. It talks at rather than communicates with.

2. Negative writing is all about me, me, me. The reader has nothing to do other than observe the words on the page.

3. Negative writing is devoid of hope, drained of dreams, and emptied of excitement.

4. Negative writing is all about complaints.

And it's hard to rally behind a complaint. By their very nature, complaints only breed more complaints but rarely, if ever, change the world for the better.

5. Negative writing does not call readers to action. It leaves them feeling unsettled and unfulfilled.

When you look at positive writing and negative writing side by side, it is crystal-clear which one is the winner.

To state the obvious, it's positive writing.

The question: How can you change the world with your writing?

Don't limit yourself.

What can you do? What do you have to offer?

We all have something.

You have the ideas, you just need a vessel. And writing can be that vessel.

So what do you have to give?

Really think about that for a moment.

It' s common knowledge that being in service to others without expecting anything in return is good for the body and mind.

So make your writing selfless.

Make your writing enriching.

Push away the fear, the doubts, and the cynicism just for a moment.

Because it's the moment where anything can happen — the only time when anything can happen.

Don't let this thought fade away. Grab it before it goes.

Life isn't meant to be passively consumed.

You know you have something to offer. If you didn't, you wouldn't be here.

Much of the world lives in the negatives.

Misery loves company. You know that.

But it's not very exciting company to keep.

To change the world, you have to take the leap.

Even the greatest visionaries had to start somewhere.

Do you want to write something that will anger and irritate, only to fizzle out soon after it's read?

Or do you want to spread the ideas that will change the world?

It may seem like a lofty goal.
